I've had the idea of burning "waste products" to generate heat, but never really looked into how.

this looks like a much better idea, especially as i'm looking at buying land out in the country and will have those million and one pine needles to clean up every year. if i can make them pay for being on my land, so much the better.

plus the leftover product is much reduced, meaning longer time between having to service the septic system.

So i finally got off my rear and applied for federal aid. i've narrowed my schools down to three. and majors also to three. one could become a minor, but what of the third?

on the table is mechanical engineering. on that side, all i want to do is research and design. i don't want to build anything, nor do i want to repair it, just to design.

the next choice i embedded systems engineering. low power, high capacity systems have long been an interest of mine. i would love to build a low cost, low power consumption Desktop that could be powered by alterative means.

the third choice is unix system administration. i've been administering my own boxes for a while and helping to maintain others. plus with paul about to get his network admin certs from SLCC, we've discussed starting a consulting firm together.

so i've got to decide. comments? i'm leaning towards engineering as that is my passion, whereas computers are only my hobby.

So i've had an idea for a low cost laptop with a long battery life.

there's that "new" UMPC classification, but the models out now aren't mobile, unless you are only looking at weight.

imo, a true portable should be able to be completely untethered for no less than 8 hours, 12 would be better.

the issue is three fold as i see it. first, we have the processor. the x86 was never designed for portable use. there's some offshoots, pentium m, AMD geode, transmeta, but those just hide the problems. while the compatibility of the geode attracts me, and i dislike intel, i think arm is the answer. Mips looks good also, but arm already has a strong following, so most of the software is already written. even windows variants if one wishes to in that way.

the second issue is accessories. a true UMPC should not have any extras. i'd include one (1) each: type II pcmcia slot, flush SD reader, usb 2.0, internal compact flash, bluetooth and wireless. also mic in and stereo out. No speakers. if one wants to listen to music, plug in external speakers.

a true UMPC should have no moving parts. even the keyboard should be solid state. one idea is to use a touch screen as the keyboard area. the image could be shown, and respond to finger touch. custom layouts would become a software issue. you could even have per program layouts.

but why use a physical part? why not use a laser to project the image onto a surface? an interagal stand and transmitter(s) wouldn't take up much weight nor power. but why a stand? i'm not saying that we must get rid of it, but most people visualize a computer as a keyboard in front of a monitor. why? imagine instead a split layout with a monitor in the middle. i belive the pepper pad has this layout. but instead what if when you wanted to use a keyboard, you placed the tablet on a flat surface, perhaps a lap stand, and activated the lasers. you could type what you needed, press a button, and no more keyboard. Nothing to tote around.

Another thing is the monitor. i watched <a href=http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0280674/>The first $20 million</a>. while their holographic display is cool, it's still too far out to see them irl.

however it got me thinking about alternatives to conventional monitors, and a search found <a href=http://www.engadget.com/2005/04/06/scalar-corp-intros-7-gram-lcd-glasses/>these</a>. i'd like to see the price closer to $100, and a screen a bit bigger not to mention wireless or bluetooth, but it looks promising.

Oxymoron: Power Supply.

Power: The term used for the product of voltage and current. It is measured in watts.

Supply: provide or furnish with; "We provided the room with an electrical heater"

A power supply doesn't provide one watt, volt or amp. it's a transformer. it takes houshould current and converts it to 12 volts at x amps.

Power supply my ass. I've got 50 of the things laying about. and 500 different things they'd be hooked to if they supplied power. I wonder if 300 watts is enough to power the well? or maybe I'll have to combine a few to get enough wattage.

Oh yeah, I guess I should mention I switched from SuSE to Gentoo 3 or 4 months back. I still reccomend SuSE for a user who doesn't want the level of control a "source" distro, such as Gentoo offers. I especially advise against installing RedFat.

I had planned to transition over to PPC, and went to Gentoo for that reason. However, since Stevie is gonna be making Macs with Intel chips in them, I'm staying with AMD. guess I'll spend my money somewhere else (RAID ;-) )

6 months. maybe I should update this more often.

This is currently being written on a 'doze machine (not mine, do I look stupid enough to not install Linux?). I was running a duron 600, but was given a 800 chip. turns out the 800 was bad, and, being the considerate chip it is, fried my board.

Fortuantly, besides regular backups, I always do both a Stage 4 backup and a backup of /home. so I'm fairly safe if my drives are also fucked.

A fortnight from now, I should have a new board & chip. AMD, of course. I own an Pentium, but didn't (and won't) pay for that crap. Gonna also pickup a 6-700 watt transformer, as I'll be increasing my SCSI count to 9. 7 drives + tape + cdr.

Where do we go from here...

Haven't posted in a while, So here's my predictions for the political future.

First, I believe the Democrats will split into 4 major groups. The largest
segment to leave will go Green (About 30%), with The republicans and
libertarians each getting 10-20% of the "moderates" Further more , I believe
the Republicans will lose the same 10% to each of the 3 other parties. McCain
will go Green, as will Hillary & Kennedy.

Hillary will run in 2008, and fail so miserably that the Democrats will split
as above. I predict she will get less than 1/3 the vote. By 2010, every
state house in the country will have at least one Green or libertarian, and
there will be no less than 4 governors.

the 2012 Race will be run on gun gun control, either a libertarian, or a
"republican" who leans libertarian Running on a platform of 100% repeal, vs a
green/democrat running for 100% consfication. If the Anti's Win, we will
have a war by 2015. I predict that the Nation will fragment into Several
small nations, some being complete, others being confederations.

My predictions are: Alaska, Hawaii and lower California will go alone.
Upper / western Oregon & western Washington will form a single state,
possibly joining with BC and Alberta.

Eastern WA and Oregon will join the Idaho Panhandle to create a new state
(we'll call it Lincoln, since there was gonna be a state named that made from
the panhandle). The upper east half of California will become part of
Nevada, and the Jefferson border will go south to near Sacramento area.
Jefferson, Nevada, Lincoln, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Arizona, Utah will form
a confederacy. Well call it the Rocky mountain confederacy, for now. Arizona
will claim the west half of New Mexico, while Texas will get the east.

Likelise, the west end of the Dakota's & Nebraska will similarly be split
between Wyoming and Nevada. the remaining Dakota's will consolidate into 1
state and join with Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois,
wisconson, Michigan, Indiana and Ohio to form a nation. Call it the Great
Lakes Nation.

West Virginia will be divided up between Ohio and Virginia. The old "new
england states" will remain calling them selves "The United States, and will
clam sorvernginity over all of "old America"

Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, the Carolina's, Alabama, Georgia, Missippi,
and Florida will form another confederation, the "new South". Texas will
split into 4 sub states, and be joined by Oklahoma, Arkansas and Lusiana to
form the Nation of Texas.

New England and the great lake will fail at a bid to re-conquer the south, and
end up Joining Eastern Canada.

By 2100 Alaska will be joined by the Yukon, BC, Alberta, and the new OR/WA
state) to form a confederacy. A revolt in California will end in a granted
petition to join the rocky mountain confederacy, along with Baja, Sonora and
Chichuana (sp?) joining either the Rocky's or Texas.

Greater Alaska, The Rockies, Texas and the South will join together to form
The American Confederacy. It will have a relationship with Canada similar
to what we have now, except a bit less friendly. Canada will slowly drift
politically closer to the AC, until they end up joining it around 2200.

Or, of course, we could elect a Libertarian or Libertarian leaning Republican
in 15, and end up with only a few states petitioning to leave (a petition a
LP winner would grant if the popular vote in those area's warrented it)

But those are just my opinions, and we'll have to see if they remain true.

I've been thinking about kids and shooting. My freinds daughter turned six, and I've got permission to teach her how to shoot. I've been thinking back to when I learned. I think i'm more excited, passing it along now, then I was as a kid.

It's funny how a few pounds of metal and wood or plastic can influnce a kid. with the wrong guide, that influnce can result in injury and death, of course, but with the right guide, it's something a child always remembers, and hopfully passes on to their children.

So I was crusing petition online, and came to the "SuSE should make ISO's" petition. I didn't sign it, As I don't belive there should be ISO's, there's no legal requirement, and there are alternative ways to obtain SuSE (or any other) Linux legally.

Goto ftp.suse.com, and look at the source RPM's. as per the GPL, the code is freely avadiable. nothing in the GPL say's it must be free in cost, or in time.

IMO, by refusing to release ISO's for x86 & PPC versions, Suse is weeding out the "lookers" and bringing in the users who are serious about getting the best linux distro commercially avadiable

Now this one is the stupidest yet. someone needs to buy a clue. all this person needs to do is borrow the CD's from work, take them home, install, then return the next day. If your company is running linux, chances are they'd be happy to loan them out.

Linux first started out as freeware, available to anyone to download via the net in ISO form. When you make it propriatery to download some 5 GB's of files, you are pusing people away from your distrubution and ultimately linux.

ok, another canidate to have a brain installed. Linux is not, and never has been freeware. What it is is open scource, governed by the GPL. you may charge for your distribution if you wish, but nothing says your customer can't distribute free copies.

as to orginally being avadiable in .ISO's, bzzt! orginally llinux was a few megabytes of source code. Not .iso, not .rpm, not even gzipped .tars. maybe .z's, but all linux was orginally was source code. as linus said "by hackers, for hackers"

and download 5 gigs? who is this guy kidding? download the boot .iso image, burn it, then select minimal system with X. you can then go back later and use YAST to get other stuff as you need it.

If SuSE does ever decide to issue .ISO's, my suggestion to them would be personal version, and yank the copyrighted material out. but as I said above, I see no need. SuSE is the best comercial distro, to get better I'd have to compile my own taylor made version. Since SuSE supports the open scource comminity financially, I figure by paying money for their product they're just acting as my agent to pay all of the thousands of programmers who wrote the software you and I use every day.

So thank you SuSE for selling me your product, instead of making it easy for me to get free copies.

Right to steal?

I've been going through some real tough times lately, looking for work. Now I've got some neighbors who Are freinds, but they seem to think that welfare is normal. I'm being encouraged to go get on welfare, because it is "my legal rigt"

Say what? I've read the constitution numerous times. I don't have it memorized, but I know the basic parts. No where in there does it say everyone can be a welfare recipiant. In order for for there to be welfare, there must mbe two people, a theif and a victim. And I am not a theif.

Sean, A good freind and I discussed this a couple weeks ago. He stated that I might be tempted to vote, if possible, myself milk and cookies. This is true. even today, temptation exists. however, somethign else also exists. I know it is wrong to steal. since I was a little kid that was drilled into me.

It makes no diffrence wheater a single individual points a gun at another, or a government points the gun (or threatens to), and gives the stolen goods to the theif.

Right to steal? where? even in nature amongst the lower animals, they protect their posessions, because it is their property.

No, there is no right to steal, there is no right to suceed, no right to survive.

There is only the fact that you own your body, and whatever you do with it is your responsiblity, for good or for bad, and everything you produce with your body (be it physical work, mental, or bartering your services for another item, such as money) is your property, to do with as you please. Wanna give it away? go ahead. wanna keep it? Go ahead.

But the moment anyone is forced to "give" any amount, then that is theft.

And I am not a theif.

It's the governments fault!

Well, at least it is for why we (as a society) use microsoft products. in our country, the majority of people work for the government, either directly, or as a 3rd party supplier. therefore, the government has set the standard. Now, if the standard was set to stuff like ascii files, that multiple programs could read, companies could pick and choose, decide what software to run. instead the standard is for Microsoft products.

because of this Microsoft has effectivly had a monopoly for the last decade in comercial software. Linux and other *nix's are slowly breaking that hold, but thanks to a government standard, we have to live with an unsecure operating system.

Don't get me wrong, I think the concept of windows, an easy to use OS for the masses is a good idea. but in reality, it is so full of security holes and sloppy programming I refuse to even have it on any of my personal machines.

for around half the cost of going to XP/2K, you can install linux. modern distros can be designed to even look just like windows, and you never need see the command line. but you'll be running a secure, open source computer. whats more, you don't need to upgrade to the newest hardware, Linux will run on a 386 if you want (got an old computer sitting in the closet? why not give it a try? if you have a fast enough connection, you can download linux from hundreds of places on the net for free. I reccomend SuSE (www.suse.org), but Redhat (www.redhat.com), and mandrake (www.mandrake.com) are also good choices. www.linux.org has local "Linux User Groups" listed to help you find local users who love to help newbies. www.linuxnewbie.org is filled with tons of help files.

Running linux is Free, it's secure, and best of all, it's fun. Break the chains of Redmond, Cast aside Gates, and follow the Penguin.

A racket?

Well, I got a new one pulled on me. Oregon, along with New Jersey, will not let ordinary citizens pump their own gas. so, despite being very short on cash, I decided to fill up my tank, and jerry can. Pull into the station, tell the guy I want both filled, but to stop if it reaches $25. well, he fills the jerry can, then sticks the nozzle into my scouts tank and walks off. According to law there is a very high fine for touching the pump, so I had to sit and watch it go past 25 dollars. granted I ended up having to pay $490 less than if I'd had to stop it, but I shouldn't have had to pay a cent over what I specified. By refusing to allow me to control the pump, the state has absolved me of the responsibility of meeting the standard I set, and accepted such responsibility themselves

I was in a hurry the other day, but next time they offer to invite the local police if I don't pay i'll say go ahead and raise bloody hell

Are people getting dumber?

I remember when I was a kid. if we didn't know something, we were encouraged to learn the answer. not be told, to learn. we had a few diffrent options, depending on what the questionh was. one was to goto the libarary and look it up. then, possibly we would be allowed to use experiments to "prove" the facts. much to my regret (and the relief of bomb squads everywhere), My experimentation with explosives was limited by my parents.

the other choice, was to skip the libarary, and go straight to proving a theroy. not always right, but it also taught me to avoid future mistake in other theroys using logic.

then I discovered computers. I still have fond memories of that vic 20. as a young teen, I discovered modems, along with several good freind. as one commented a few months back, when I got online, you needed to have at leasyt a basic knowledge of programing. you had to know how to (at least) manipulate a script to connect.

now? all you need is a finger to click the mouse.

Today, no one experiments. they just go online. there's a real anoying radio comercial that uses the sound of a modem connecting (which is why I refuse to visit their site), that tells people, don't bother looking up the info yourself, come to this site! what next? will some web site offer us cradle to grave security?

Space -- We need more of it.

For a long time I've advocated that the human race needs to leave earth. why? because it's too small.

4 centuries ago, when this area was first settled, it would take around 3 months for any message from the parent country to reach it's subjects. it would take the same amount of time for any agent to arrive, as they both would use the same means of travel.

Now? your glorious leaders can send you a message via TV & radio as if you were in the same room, listening to them speak. time to get an agent there? we've got planes that can circle the globe in less than a day. even the more conventional commercial aircraft can go from one coast to the other in less than 10 hours.

It's too easy to be reached.

when it was hard for our masters to contact us, out of nesecarriness, we became independent. we even went to war against the most powerful nation on earth, and surprising everyone, including ourselves, we won.

I've long argued any distance to our masters that can be traveled in less than a week, is too close. In order to be free, we need to be far enough away to make it too expensive to reach us, both in cost and in time.

Ok, I got off the track in my last posting. Like I said, we have a few dozen tons of laws, all designed to control.

In reality, we only need one. It's been written a few diffrent ways, and called diffrent names. I learned it as the Non-initiation Clause, others call it the NAP or ZAP. regardless, the basic of it is no one has the moral right to iniate force, and it is morally correct to respond with force, if such is iniated against you, or those you are responsible for.

how hard is that to understand? no one has the right to iniate (start) violence (either physically, or via theft), and everyone has the right to resist those who try.

yet so many of those we've sent to rule us can't grasp this simple concept.

one law. one paragraph. thats all we need. hell, it's so simple, some benevolent person, could pay for (forcing others to pay would of course be theft) a wallet sized card for every person in the world to have one, and the combined weight of every card would still weigh less than a tenth of what our current laws do.

More does not equal simple.

In this country, we have a few dozen tons of laws. that is we have a few dozen ton, if we scan everything, and put it on dvd's before compressing it. in their natural state, our lawbooks outweigh most of Washington DC. This is out ragious. It's bad enough we have to suffer through laws, but despite what our benovolent masters tell us, laws have only one purpose. To create criminals. A government cannot control the lawabiding, it has nothing upon which to threaten them with. so it makes rule, so many of which it is impossible not to break at least one.

"But I'm not a crook" you cry. Probably not, but your masters must make you think so. you must be made to feel guilty, otherwise they have no hold upon you.

Have you ever gone so much as 1/10 mile over the speed limit? you're a criminal.

When you come to a stop line on the road, do you stop in front of it, on it, or behind it? if your front bumper is anywhere but behind it, you're a criminal.

When crossing at a busy cross walk, have you every accidently stepped outside the lines? You're guilty of jay walking.

Now, it's just not the various police watching us. thanks to ridge and the Ministry of Love, you're neighbors, postman, even your relatives watch like a hawk, eager to appease. thinking that if they throw the wolf a bone every now and then, sooner or later it'll get full, and leave them alone.

What fools they are.
